The Commuter Challenge took place in Winnipeg June 5-11. It is a national program that encourages participants to walk, cycle, take transit, or carpool instead of driving alone to their workplace. Those who signed up for the Commuter Challenge also tracked their commuting information for the week.
There were about 14 Payworks employees who participated in the Commuter Challenge. In total, they traveled 813.63 kilometers, approximately 100 times the length of the Las Vegas Strip; they saved 57.32 litres of fuel, approximately five times the volume of a basketball and three-fourths the volume of a car gas tank; and avoided 120.05 kilograms of carbon dioxide into the environment, approximately one-half the weight of a cubic meter of snow.
Through the various commute modes; 322.03 kilometers were traveled by bike; 412.85 kilometers via a two-person carpool; 14.4 kilometers by telecommuting; 63.35 kilometers by transit, and 1 kilometer by walking.
“Participating in the commuter challenge helped me see the big positive impact it has when many people get together to make good choices for commuting and healthy choices for them and the environment,” said Payworks Infrastructure Analyst Kevin Yaworski who participated in the event. “It has helped me want to get a fat bike with bigger tires for winter and try cycling in winter to work.”
Also participating in the Commuter Challenge from Payworks was Systems Developer Darryl Neufeld; Marketing Coordinator Amanda Soloway; Operations Support Paul Kesson; Distribution Matt Doyle; Product Support Specialist Cheryl Costen; Business Development Specialist Callan Davey; Marketing Assistant Douglas Santos; Quality Assurance Analysts Geeta Hegde and Brittany Fiel; as well as Client Service Representatives Susan Bjerring, Jolie LeBoutillier, Maria Genter, and Laura Hastings.
Fantastic job to everyone who participated!
