Starting in November of 2015, Payworks added a Pay-It Forward Day to its list of employee benefits. This has allowed the company to give more than monetary donations, but also people’s time. Payworks employees can take one paid day off per calendar year to donate their time to a not-for-profit charitable organization. Analyst Trevor MacHutchon chose to spend his day delivering the message Pay It Forward Day represents – the positive energy that comes with giving.
Through the United Way Sponsored Executive program Trevor took part in December of 2015, he met Yvette Deveau, founder of the Manitoba chapter of Pay It Forward. He explained that she would share stories of all of the activities she was involved in through the Pay It Forward Manitoba organization, and asked if he would like to help on International Pay It Forward Day. He, of course, said yes.
“It’s easy to go about your day and be stressed out, and caught up with the hustle and bustle and forget to do those kind gestures. Like holding a door open for someone or buying them a cup of coffee,” said Trevor.
“It was an awesome day. Very gratifying and humbling to meet grateful people throughout the day. And it’s pretty awesome Payworks gives you a day to do something like that. A lot of the people there used to use a holiday day to give back,” said Trevor. “It’s so much different than everyday life and you leave feeling that you made a small difference in someone’s day.”
“It’s remarkable what a big difference such a small act can make in someone’s day,” he said.
